Losing your teeth is a big deal. There are many reasons why you might lose your teeth, including gum disease and facial trauma. Tooth loss causes several issues, whether you have lost only one tooth or you have lost several. In addition to impacting your smile, tooth loss can cause issues eating and speaking. Tooth loss also impacts the health of your jawbone, leading to bone loss. At North Atlanta Family Dentistry, we can provide treatment for missing teeth with dental implants.
What Are Dental Implants?
Traditionally, missing teeth have been replaced using bridges or dentures. Today, however, you have additional options. While the dental implants have technically been around for thousands of years, modern dental implants are the result of an accidental discovery made in the 1950s. Implants use small titanium posts, which are placed in your jawbone with a surgical procedure. A gradual process called osseointegration occurs. This is the process during which your jawbone fuses to the posts, stabilizing them within your jaw. The posts then become strong, secure roots that provide support for your dental restorations.
Meeting a Variety of Needs
Implants are incredibly versatile and can be used to meet some different needs. There are many different types of dental implants.
Single tooth. A single tooth implant is used to replace an individual tooth. One post and one crown replace a single tooth. You can have more than one single tooth implant in your mouth. They may be used to replace single teeth missing from different areas of your mouth, or they can be placed side by side.
Multiple teeth. This type of restoration is also called an implant supported bridge. It is used to replace two or more consecutive missing teeth.
Full arch restorations. A full arch restoration replaces an entire arch of missing teeth. Typically, 6 to 8 posts are needed to support your new teeth. If you are missing too much bone mass, there are alternative treatments that help you to avoid a bone graft, including treatments like All on 4 and TeethXpress.
Placing implants is done with a surgical procedure. After administering a local anesthetic and providing sedation, small incisions are made in your gums. This provides us with access to your jawbone. Holes are drilled into your jaw, and the implant posts are placed directly inside. Your gums are sutured closed, and temporary teeth are set into place. After you have healed, your final dental restorations are designed, created, and placed.
