Dentistry for Kids
Taking care of your mouth is important. However, did you know that the same oral care habits that apply to you also apply to your child? Just like you, your child should, with your help, be practicing good oral hygiene from an early age. While you can help your child to brush and floss their teeth, they also require professional care as well. At North Atlanta Family Dentistry, we provide the specialized care that your child needs to develop good oral health habits and to maintain a healthy mouth for a lifetime.
When Should My Child Have Their First Visit?
The first dental visit should occur earlier than most parents realize. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, children should be seen six months after the eruption of their first tooth, or by their first birthday, whichever is first.
The first visit, and the next few following are fairly simple and short, designed to help accommodate your child with us and for us to get to know your child. We take a quick look at their mouth for potential issues and clean any teeth that may be present. We also take the time to go over proper oral hygiene for your child, habits like thumb sucking and pacifier use, teething, and more. We can also answer any questions that you might have.
Cleanings and Exams
Your child should have their teeth cleaned and examined every six months, just like you. With cleanings, we can help your child to further prevent the formation of serious oral health issues like cavities. We scrape the surfaces of their teeth, including the surfaces they may not be able to clean effectively on their own. We also polish their teeth and floss them.
Regular dental exams allow us to check over the condition of the teeth and gums. We can detect the earliest warning signs of issues such as tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease, allowing us to provide your child with the treatment they need to restore the health of their mouth and prevent more serious issues from developing later.
Fluoride and Sealants
Children tend to be more prone to cavities than adults. We can help to further protect their teeth with fluoride and sealants. Fluoride treatments involve the application of a fluoride gel onto the surfaces of the teeth. The fluoride absorbs directly into the enamel, helping to strengthen the teeth and protect them against the acid attacks of plaque and bacteria.
Sealants are designed to protect the chewing surfaces of the molars. These surfaces have deep crevices that can easily trap bacteria and food particles. They can also be difficult for your child to clean thoroughly. With sealants, these crevices are covered over, preventing anything from getting trapped. They also help make it easier for your child to keep their teeth clean.
Preparing Your Child for Their Visit
We understand that going to the dentist can be a scary experience for your child. We do our best to create a warm, comforting environment from the moment they step foot in the office. You can also help to prepare them at home. Let your child know about the appointment in advance. This can help them to prepare mentally. You can also have some fun by investing in books about going to the dentist or playing pretend dentist. This will get your child familiar with the process in a safe environment, which can help to reduce anxiety.
Helping your child to take care of their mouth from an early age is essential for giving them the tools they need to maintain their oral health for a lifetime. For more information, and to schedule an appointment for your child, call North Atlanta Family Dentistry today at (470) 387-0500.
