IV Sedation

Women receiving safe and relaxing sedation options at North Atlanta Family Dentistry In addition to brushing and flossing every day, professional dental care is essential. Along with routine dental cleanings and exams every six months, professional care is also necessary when you notice symptoms of oral health issues. However, if the thought of undergoing dental care makes you feel uneasy, you may avoid going. Avoiding dental care can have serious consequences on the health of your mouth and your whole body. North Atlanta Family Dentistry can help to make dental treatment easier with IV sedation.

Why Sedation?

Sedation is a type of treatment that helps you to feel more relaxed and more comfortable in the dental chair while we perform your necessary procedures. When you feel more relaxed, we can perform treatment in a safer, more effective manner.

Sedation is commonly used for patients who suffer anxiety or fear. However, it can also be used in other situations. You may be recommended for sedation if:
•  You have a strong gag reflex.
•  You have a low pain threshold.
•  Your teeth are highly sensitive.
•  You are unable to sit still.
•  Your treatment will take a long time, or you need several treatments at once.

What is IV Sedation?

IV sedation is a type of sedation that involves delivering the sedative directly into your bloodstream. With IV sedation, we insert a needle into the back of your hand or your arm. This needle is attached to IV fluids. When we are ready to begin your treatment, the medication is administered into the fluids, and it travels into your body.

There are different levels of IV sedation. One of the most common types of IV sedation is moderate conscious sedation. With this type of sedation, you are conscious but sleepy. You may even experience temporary amnesia, a condition in which you are unable to remember parts, or any, of your procedure. IV sedation can also be used for deep sedation or general anesthesia.

The Benefits of IV Sedation

There are many benefits associated with IV sedation.
•  The medication takes effect very quickly after it is administered.
•  As soon as the medication takes effect, you feel relaxed and calm.
•  When you are relaxed and calm, we can provide you with safe, effective care.
•  Sedation can be adjusted as needed during your treatment.

Is IV Sedation Safe?

IV sedation is both safe and effective. Before your appointment, you will be provided with specific instructions. Following these instructions is important for ensuring that everything goes smoothly. With IV sedation, you will be instructed to avoid eating or drinking anything, including water, for 6 to 8 hours before your appointment. However, if you need to take medication before your appointment, you will be permitted a small amount of water. Neglecting to follow your instructions may result in the need to reschedule your appointment.

You are closely monitored throughout the duration of your procedure. We can make any necessary adjustments to your IV sedation. Your vitals are also monitored. Once your treatment is complete, and your IV is removed, you remain in the office for a set period so that we can ensure there are no issues. The effects of your sedation will linger for several hours, so you will need to have someone who can drive you home.

With IV sedation, you can relax during your dental treatments, allowing us to provide you with the care you need in a safe, effective way. For more information, and to find out of IV sedation is right for you, call North Atlanta Family Dentistry today at (470) 387-0500.
