Sports Dentistry

Football player tackled while catching throwSports are an excellent pastime. They get you up, moving, and interacting with others. Whether you play sports as part of a team or just for fun with friends, they can be a great activity to be involved in. Certain sports, however, pose more of a risk for injury than others. For higher risk sports, such as football, soccer, baseball, or martial arts, wearing the right protective gear is imperative for protecting yourself. While you may have all of the gear you need to protect your body, it is also important that you make sure to protect your mouth. Should injuries occur, treatment is needed right away. North Atlanta Family Dentistry can help with sports dentistry.

What Is Sports Dentistry?

Sports dentistry is a type of dentistry that focuses on preventing and dealing with dental and facial injuries as well as oral diseases that develop as a result of sports or exercise. With sports dentistry, we can help you to maximize participation in the game while preventing injuries from occurring. Should sports injuries occur, however, treatment is needed right away. With sports dentistry, we can help you to get the treatment you need, restoring the health of your mouth, its functions, and your smile.

Prevention of Sports Related Injuries

One of the major goals of sports dentistry is to prevent dental and facial injuries from occurring in the first place. The main way that this is done is with a mouthguard. While you can get stock or boil and bite mouthguard from just about any sporting goods store, we recommend a custom created sports mouthguard. A custom mouthguard is made from an impression of your mouth, which ensures a proper fit. We also use high-quality materials, which helps to ensure optimal protection. With a properly fitting mouthguard, we can help to prevent dental injuries, lacerations to your oral tissues, jaw dislocation, and fractures, as well as a concussion.

Treating Sports Related Dental Injuries

While taking action to prevent injuries from occurring, they can still happen. Moreover, when they do, treatment is needed right away. Even seemingly minor issues can have a major impact if not treated promptly. Injuries to your teeth can lead to infections and tooth loss. Soft tissue injuries can affect nerves, blood vessels, and the salivary system. Injuries to your jawbone can affect the functioning of your mouth, making it difficult to bite, chew, and speak. When it comes to sports related injuries, we can provide care for a wide variety of different issues.
•  Soft tissue injuries. Soft tissue injuries do more than affect your facial appearance. They can also affect nerves, salivary glands and ducts, and blood vessels. With immediate treatment, these systems can be restored, preventing significant complications while restoring your facial appearance and smile.
•  Bone injuries. Fractured facial bones need to be set. Unlike injuries to other bones, though, facial bones cannot be put in a cast. Instead, bones are set with wiring or plates and screws.
•  Dental injuries. There are numerous dental injuries that can affect your teeth, from cracks and chips to tooth displacement, to tooth loss. Cracked and chipped teeth can often be treated with crowns. Teeth that have been knocked partially out of the socket or deeper into it can be reset and secured. Teeth that have been knocked out can sometimes be replanted. If they cannot be, the teeth can then be replaced.

With sports dentistry, we can help you to prevent serious oral injuries while you play your favorite sports and provide you with the expert care you need if an injury does occur.
