Man smiling after teeth whitening treatment at North Atlanta Family Dentistry in Johns Creek and Cummings, GA.Your smile says a lot about you. One of the first things that people notice when you smile is your teeth. Normally, the teeth are a bright white in color. However, there are many factors that can dull the natural whiteness of your teeth, thereby dulling the quality of your smile and affecting your confidence. At North Atlanta Family Dentistry we can restore the bright white color of your teeth with teeth whitening.

What is Teeth Whitening?

There are many factors that can contribute to dulling the color of your teeth. Common factors include:
•  Coffee.
•  Tea.
•  Red wine.
•  Dark fruits and vegetables.
•  Tobacco products.
•  Certain types of medications.
•  Aging.

Teeth whitening is a treatment that is provided to eliminate the stains dulling the natural whiteness of your teeth. In doing so, we help to improve the quality of your smile and boost your confidence.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

There are two ways in which teeth can be professionally whitened. One way is with an in-office procedure, also called chairside whitening. This treatment takes one appointment and about an hour to complete. After cleaning your teeth, a whitening gel is painted onto the surfaces of your enamel. The active ingredients in the gel break down to form oxygen bubbles that enter into your tooth enamel to eliminate stains.

Your teeth can also be professionally whitened at home with whitening trays. Custom trays are made from molds of your mouth. They are designed to hold the whitening gel against the surfaces of your teeth for a few hours twice a day or overnight while you sleep. This type of whitening lets you whiten in the comfort of your own home. Treatment typically takes one to two weeks depending upon the extent of your discoloration.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

Typically, you can expect the results of professional teeth whitening to last about 2 to 3 years. How long your teeth whitening lasts, however, depends upon several factors. These factors include continuing to consume foods and beverages that cause stains, continuing to use tobacco products and good oral hygiene practices. Typically, those who work to maintain the results of their whitening experience the longest lasting results.

Even with proper care, it is normal to experience some discoloration of your teeth over time again. In addition to taking proper care of your mouth and working to maintain the results of your whitening, periodic touchups can help to ensure that your smile continues to stay brilliant and beautiful.

What About Over the Counter Whiteners?

You have probably seen a wide array of whitening products available in the oral care aisle. These products have lower concentrations of whitening agents. How long the results of these products last varies depending upon the product.
•  Toothpastes. Whitening toothpaste help to scrub away minor surface stains and may be able to help whiten your teeth up to one shade. Results can be expected to last about a month.
•  Over the counter whitening trays. These products can help to whiten your teeth up to 3 shades and last about a month.
•  Whitening strips. Whitening strips can whiten up to 2 shades and often last about 2 months.
