3D rendering of dental crowns at North Atlanta Family Dentistry, Johns Creek, GATooth damage is a serious issue. Even if the damage does not seem that significant at the time, it can worsen over time. Damage can compromise the structural integrity of the affected teeth as well as the health of your mouth. When your teeth are damaged, treatment is needed as quickly as possible. At North Atlanta Family Dentistry, we can treat tooth damage with crowns.

What Is a Dental Crown?

Tooth damage, even minor damage, should be examined as quickly as possible. Even minor damage can grow worse over time. Larger tooth damage can leave the tooth vulnerable to splitting or shattering. They also become susceptible to tooth infections.

A crown is a common treatment used for restoring damaged teeth. They resemble caps in appearance and are designed to encase the entire visible surface damaged teeth. They effectively hold damaged teeth together, preventing further harm as well as infection. They also work to restore strength to damaged teeth, allowing them to function normally in your mouth.

Types of Dental Crowns

Crowns can be made from a variety of different materials. These include:
•  Metal. A metal crown is made entirely of metal. It is the strongest material available and practically indestructible. While strong, though, metal crowns are gold or silver in color, leaving them incredibly noticeable.
•  Porcelain fused to metal. Often called PFM crowns, these types of crowns have a metal base and porcelain coating. The metal base provides incredible protection while the porcelain provides a more aesthetic solution. The problem, however, is that a metal line can often be seen through the porcelain at the base of the crown, making it more prominent.
•  Ceramic. Ceramic crowns are made entirely from ceramic. This material can be stained to match the exact color of your natural teeth while also reflecting light just like natural tooth enamel. While not as strong as metal, porcelain can withstand most normal daily wear and tear and can last 15 to 20 years or more with proper care.

What to Expect During Crown Placement

Placing a crown requires two appointments which are separated by about two weeks. Your first appointment is devoted to preparing the affected tooth for the crown and taking impressions. Preparing the tooth, which is done under a local anesthetic, involves removing a portion of the tooth enamel, making it smaller. This is done to ensure a proper, comfortable fit. After preparing the tooth, we take impressions, which are sent to our dental lab.

The lab uses your impressions to custom create your new crown. This can take up to two weeks, so a temporary crown is placed while you wait to protect the tooth. Once the crown is completed, you have your second appointment. At this appointment, the crown is assessed for fit and bite before being bonded into place with special dental cement.
