Dental Exams
in Johns Creek & Cumming

Women in dentist chair receiving dental exam at North Atlanta Family Dentistry, Johns Creek, GATaking steps to maintain your oral health is essential for preventing serious issues from developing. The American Dental Association recommends brushing at least twice a day as well as flossing at least once daily. In addition to these daily habits, it is also important that you have your teeth professionally cleaned at least twice a year. Even with good oral hygiene practices, though, oral health issues can still develop. Moreover, the earliest stages of many issues often show no symptoms. At North Atlanta Family Dentistry, we perform dental exams to detect the presence of oral health issues, allowing you to get the treatment you need to maintain a healthy, happy mouth.

What Is a Dental Exam?

A dental exam is an appointment during which we evaluate the health of your mouth. We look over the structures in your mouth, checking for signs and symptoms of a wide variety of different oral health concerns, including tooth decay, cavities, gum disease, tooth damage, and much more. The ADA recommends that you have routine dental exams performed at least twice a year, or once every six months. These exams are generally performed in the same appointment as your dental cleanings. These types of exams allow us to detect the presence of oral health issues in their earliest stages, enabling us to provide you with the treatment you need to stop the progression of the issue and restore the health of your mouth.

Different Types of Dental Exams

While routine dental exams are recommended to help maintain the health of your mouth, issues may still arise. When you are faced with an oral health issue, we can perform an oral exam to determine the cause of your symptoms and determine the best treatment possible. There are a few different types of exams that can be performed:
•  Comprehensive. A comprehensive exam is performed if it's your first visit to our office, or it has been a while since your last appointment. We go over your dental history, your medical history, and take dental x-rays.
•  Periodic. A periodic exam is your routine dental exam. During this exam, we examine your mouth and update your dental information.
•  Limited. A limited exam is done when we need to determine the cause of specific symptoms. This exam may or may not involve x-rays.
•  Follow-up. A follow-up exam is done following dental treatment to ensure that you are healing properly.

What to Expect During an Exam

Your exam is a fairly straightforward process. We look over the condition of your teeth, checking for signs of decay, cavities, and physical damage. We check your gums for redness, swelling, recession, and periodontal pockets. We also assess your intraoral tissues for any abnormalities that might indicate oral cancer or other pathological issues.

Some exams involve the use of x-rays as well. With x-rays, we can see the hidden structures of your mouth. We can spot cavities between your teeth, damage to your tooth roots, bone loss, and damage to your jaw, cysts, abscesses, impacted teeth, and more. These images help to give us a complete picture of your oral health so that we can help you to keep it happy and healthy.

At the end of your exam, we also take some time to discuss any issues that we may have found, along with possible treatment plans. We can provide you with tips on how to improve oral hygiene habits at home. We can also take the time to address any of your concerns and answer your questions.
